Rihanna vs M83 - Midnight City Diamonds
mashup by http://soundcloud.com/adam-eyrolet
Diamonds came on the radio a few minutes ago (as it does) and when the first piano chord hit, I thought of my favorite song of 2012 “Midnight City” by M83. Lo and behold, I wasn’t the first to notice the key and chord progression were virtually identical because here’s this great mash up.
I only have one qualm with this; no sax solo. Sad day.
Otherwise: brilliant.

I said to someone last night that the thing that makes pop music so amazing, to me, is its universality; the breadth of its reach. The best pop song makes everyone feel something, no matter how mulishly resistant to its impact they might be. Music is a tool to enhance or alter my emotional…
this.

The soundtrack for Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby continues to surface. As a big LDR fan (hate on me if you want), I’m sincerely excited to hear the full version of Lana Del Rey’s contribution to the Jay-Z produced motion picture soundtrack. Here’s her grand, gorgeous song Young & Beautiful. It’s a beautiful, sappy love ballad. I’m ready to go see The Great Gatsby opening weekend. So excited.
Here’s the full tracklist for the OST….01 Jay-Z: “100$ Bill”
02 Beyoncé and André 3000: “Back to Black”
03 will.i.am: “Bang Bang”
04 Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock: “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)”
05 Lana Del Rey: “Young and Beautiful”
06 Bryan Ferry With the Bryan Ferry Orchestra: “Love Is the Drug”
07 Florence and the Machine: “Over the Love”
08 Coco O of Quadron: “Where The Wind Blows”
09 Emeli Sandé and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra: ”Crazy in Love”
10 The xx: “Together”
11 Gotye: “Hearts a Mess”
12 Jack White: “Love Is Blindness”
13 Nero: “Into the Past”
14 Sia: “Kill and Run”

from I Heart MoosiqFALL OUT BOY - YOUNG VOLCANOES
You know an indie rock trope is over when Fall Out Boy does a version of it.
I’ll be the first to admit that Fall Out Boy makes the best kind of pop music around. But I have my issues with it. I’m not crazy about Patrick stump’s voice (stop constantly yelling at me, Patrick!) and I think the songs are always too overwrought - and yeah, that’s also why Pete Wentz’s tracks work well for radio.
With “Young Volcanoes,” Wentz takes notes on all those massive indie sleeper hits that dominated radio during the band’s hiatus. There’s shades of Mumford, bright guitars and a stampy beat, over a wordless ‘woahoh’ hook not dissimilar to bands like Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes. Then, of course, the injection of a heavy bassline akin to the low lows of The XX or Alt-J (you know Wentz loves the hell out of that trend.) it’s all packaged with Stump’s semi-unintelligible and recognizable vocals. It’s also got a cheery anthemic message that is sure to be sung along with when it comes on the radio or at your favorite bar. I mean, I know I’ll be singing along. Even if it starts to approach Train-esque territory.
Yes, “Young Volcanoes” is a sure smash. It’s poppy, indie, rock and branded as Fall Out Boy. Smart move, Wentz.
I knew my jangly guitar stomp indie pop love affair would end, and this is the fitting cap on it. (I just thank God the cap didn’t come from that horrible “Home” song by Jacob Jacobs or whatever his name is. Philip Phillips! Damn, that song is awful.)

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE - OVER THE LOVE
Flo and co have written this song for the Great Gatsby soundtrack and it’s an absolute gem, as to be expected.
Written from Daisy’s perspective, the song makes Gatsby’s one true love have much more gravitas and seem less vapid as ever. The song is fantastic and grows to a climax only this band could bring us.
