Zella Day - East of Eden

Zella Day just proved she’s a formidable up and comer. East of Eden plays up everything she did right on “Sweet Ophelia” earlier this year. There’s a true indie pop flavor to this track that will have major mainstream crossover appeal. Let’s not forget to mention how literarily adept her songs are.

The song is great fun until that big booming bridge kicks in and Zella Day takes center stage as pop’s newest contender with maximalist bombast. That last minute is pop magic.

GRIMES - GO

Grimes teams up with Blood Diamonds to produce a crazy trap pop song that only these two could create.  Apparently, the duo wrote this song for Rihanna.

It’s a bit of a step away from Grimes’ previous material, but I think it’s a welcome addition to her catalogue. Can’t wait to hear more.

Take Shelter - Years & Years.

Nothing says “hello, summer” like a great electro pop track with a tropical flare. Years and Years have knocked out a great follow up to their exceptional, wintry “Real.” Olly Alexander’s beautiful vocals soar over the bubbling beat. It’s a great summer jam featuring very effective lovelorn lyrics about taking solace in casual sex.

Watch for this track. I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot of it.

party-music:

Lionhearted - Porter Robinson & Urban Cone.

This song has a strange level of nostalgia for me. It reminds me of the synthy pop of Passion Pit (especially in the verses) it’s mixed with the morose lyricism and stellar electronica of of Miike Snow. That’s high praise from me, since those are some of my favorite artists.
And that drop is unexpected and spectacular. It gives me the EDM feels of a Calvin Harris progressive house drop.
Big track from Porter Robinson. Very excited to hear this everywhere soon.
